Date

Scope & content
Annotated 'by Mexico & by the U.S.'
He acknowledges receipt of a letter and the journal, dated 12 Jan, and a small tin box of seeds 'in tolerably good condition'; he wrote to him on 15 Jan to the care of Messrs Barron & Co [Messrs Barron, Forbes & Co, merchants in Mexico], asking him to pay more attention to his communication according to the instructions and his agreement with the Society; he should communicate with them at every opportunity, as there was no communication from Hartweg between 28 Jul 1846 and 12 Jan 1847; his journal should be more detailed, with notes on the climate and any other interesting matters, 'in great detail'; the journal he sent was too general; they have only received 'one very small tin box' of seeds in the past six months; the Council is aware of the difficulties of communication, but do not understand why letters and journal should not have been duly written; [postscript added on a loose slip of paper] he ought to try sending his dispatches via Royal Mail Company, instead of the Pacific Steam Packet Company, as the former has regular communication with England via Panama
