Postmarked ('CJ 2MY2 1848'). An opened seal is attached to the letter
He left Monterey [California, United States of America] on 5 Feb for his homeward journey via Guatemala in the schooner SS, and arrived at Mazatlan a few days ago; the Nathalia from California is expected to arrive soon, and the tin cases and the Wardian cases will be forwarded by Messrs Mott, Talbot & Co [merchants in Mexico] to Valparaiso [Chile]; HMS Grampus will sail there in a few days, but the captain refused to take them; he will leave tomorrow and travel to Belize via Guatemala, hoping to find a merchant ship sailing for England or a steamer from Havannah [Havana, Cuba]

Cuesta de San Antonio [California]'), Viola chrysantha [Viola toroensis] ('the pastures near Monterey [California]') and Rhododendron californicum [Hymenanthes californica] ('1 plant') [here the list includes 18 more plants]
