He acknowledges receipt of letters dated 1 Dec and 2 Jan, and thanks them on behalf of the council for their assistance to Mr Hartweg [Theodor Hartweg]; two cases and a tin box arrived on the Tweed, and one case and a tin box on the Trent 'with unusual expedition, and in excellent order'; Messrs Manning & Mackintosh tell him in their letter of 30 Dec that Hartweg requested the transfer of £400 in credit to Messrs Barron, Forbes & Co [merchants in Mexico], and the Society will reimburse their payments; he hopes the government is now permanent, 'so as to allow the resources of Mexico to become more fully developed'
