They acknowledge receipt of letters dated 26 May and 1 Jul and the copies of the letter to Mr McLane [Louis McLane, minister of the United States in London] and his response of 17 Jun; Hartweg has been in California for some time, and they do not know if he may meet with obstructions due to the 'new state of affairs in that country', but they will send 'the document' when they have an opportunity; they received a letter from him from Monterey dated 28 Jul, enclosing a letter for the Society which they forwarded by the last post; Hartweg said he had sent a package of seeds via Mazatlan [Mexico], but the ship had been captured by an 'American cruiser', and the seeds were 'wetted and lost'; they will forward Hartweg's collections as suggested
