He visited Lord Haddington [Thomas Hamilton, Earl of Haddington, first lord of the Admiralty], who promised to assist them; he wrote to him 'relating what you say of the Herald' and asking him to recommend Hartweg to Captain Kellett [British naval officer and explorer, who surveyed the North American coast on HMS Herald in 1845-1848]; as he will be travelling to Germany, he asked Haddington to respond to Lindley; he has also spoken to Admiral Brooks[?] [unidentified], who will be sure to assist; he met [illegible name] yesterday at dinner and found out from him that communication between the United States and California ('or rather Oregon') is almost entirely confined to the spring, and that the journey can only be accomplished with 'the large bodies of emigrants, who go there periodically'; he asks Lindley to 'put down' the name of the son of Tremayne's [John Hearle Tremayne, owner of the Heligan Estate in Cornwall and brother-in-law of Charles Lemon] butler, Charles Scoborio [son of Thomas Scoborio, and later a gardener at Warrnambool Botanic Gardens, Australia], aged 18, as a candidate for employment in the garden
