Marked at the top of the page 'No 9'. Annotated at the top of page: 'Joseph Sabine received Oct 21 1822'
He encloses a receipt for the two boxes sent on board the Lusitania; the list of the contents was sent with the letter on 3 Jun; he has left a large box of living plants with Pedra Leander [Leandro do Sacramento, Carmelite friar and botanist in Brazil]; Mr Heatherly [Alexander John Heatherly, British vice-consul in Brazil] has decided to travel to the interior of Brazil: 'we have therefore solicited his correspondence'; Captain Owen [William FitzWilliam Owen, captain of HMS Leven] will send Sabine a copy of the letter written to Heatherly, who wishes to become a member of the Society: 'from his general knowledge of plants and natural history, particularly birds and insects, I think he is likely to be of great use to us'; Heatherly has been on excursions with Dr Sellow [Friedrich Sellow, German botanist and naturalist in Brazil]; he has drawn £10 to purchase 'some articles for myself which I shall not have an opportunity of getting anywhere else'; he has been unable to collect enough insects to fill the box due to wet weather, and intends to leave the box with Dr Dickson [John Dickson, a Royal Navy surgeon in Brazil] to be filled up and forwarded to England
Enclosed receipt: 'Received on board the Lusitania two boxes directed to the Horticultural Society, London. Contents unknown to me. W. Langdon [William Langdon, captain of the Lusitania], Rio de Janeiro, June 4th 1822'
