John Forbes received Sabine's letter the previous day, along with two other letters enclosed; they will remain in Portsmouth for a few days longer; he asks Sabine to send the 'pins' for Sacramento [Leandro do Sacramento, Carmelite friar and botanist in Brazil], and the letter from Lord Bathurst [Henry Bathurst, 3rd earl of Bathurst, British secretary of state for war and colonies] to Lord Charles Somerset [Charles Henry Somerset, governor of the Cape Colony, South Africa] by return post; he has come on shore to purchase six more bags of shot gun flints, alum 'and some other necessaries for myself and the mess', having drawn £10 from the RHS treasurer via Captain Owen [William FitzWilliam Owen, captain of HMS Leven], not wishing to use his dollars before reaching Lisbon [Portugal], and Owen being of the opinion he did not have enough shots; the Bann has not yet reached Portsmouth and therefore he has left the parcel given to him by Sabine for Captain Sabine [Edward Sabine, astronomer and geophysicist, brother of Joseph Sabine] at the admiral's office, where he will be able to collect it; they will stop at Plymouth, weather permitting
