Coloured engraved plate depicting the garden at Carlton House, [Westminster, London]. The gardens of Carlton House were laid out by William Kent (an architect, landscape architect, painter and furniture designer) for Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707 -1751). In 1783, Frederick's grandson George, Prince of Wales (later George IV) took procession of Carlton House and made it an alternative court to that of his parents, King George III and Queen Charlotte. Carlton House was demolished in 1826 and replaced by two stuccoed terraces, in order to help fund the rebuilding of Buckingham Palace for George IV.
