The manuscript text translates as: 'Monsieur P Ledoulx, painter, finding a fault in this sheet while copying this flower, covered it with a scrap of paper and painted this spider onto it so realistically that when an old, deaf servant came in to tidy the room, she took the end of a matchstick and tried to chase the spider from the paper; seeing that she had been fooled, she raised her fist to the painter to show him she realised he had fooled her.'
