Scope & content
Black and white engraved plate depicting Audley [End] House in Essex, one of the finest Jacobean Houses in England. The house was inherited by Sir John Griffin Griffin, a professional soldier in 1762. Griffin employed Robert Adam to extend the house. Lancelot 'Capability' Brown was also employed to remodel the grounds, although he was later replaced by Joseph Hicks after a quarrel with Sir John. As of 2022, the house is run by English Heritage. In the foreground of the engraving, a figure with a dog can be seen walking away from the house, with the house behind them. The book plate bears the imprints 'Published as the Act directs, Jany. 1st. 1781, by W. Watts, Kemp's Row, Chelsea', 'W. Donn delt.' and 'W. Watts sculpt.' From the book 'The seats of the nobility and gentry' by William Watts
