Scope & content
Black and white engraved plate depicting Godmersham Park in Kent. Build in 1732 for Thomas May, the house was latterly inherited by Edward Austen, brother of Jane Austen. Jane was a regular visitor to the house between 1798 and 1813 and is said to have based 'Mansfield Park' on Godmersham Park. The house can be seen to the right of the engraving, with a carriage driving away from the house. A river runs nearby with a bridge crossing towards a group of buildings. A hill can be seen in the background. The book plate bears the imprints 'Publish'd as the Act directs Nov. 1st. 1784, by W.Watts, Chelsea' and 'W. Watts, del. et Sculp'.
