A close friend of Charles Darwin, he travelled widely, and was the assistant surgeon on the HMS Erebus Antarctic expedition of 1839-1943. Director of Kew from 1865-1885, a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Linnean Society and was awarded the Victoria Medal of Horticulture (VMH) in 1897
