He worked as an assistant in Joseph Banks's herbarium, and was made a Fellow of the Linnean Society in 1820. He was Secretary of the Horticultural Society (now the RHS), and Professor of Botany at University College, London and was instrumental in the establishment of The Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew
