Sir Roderick Impey Murchison (1792-1871), usually known as Sir Roderick Murchison. He spent his career as a geologist, becoming famous for his work on the Alps and on fossils, establishing the Silurian system. In 1830 he was one of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society, and served four terms as President. He became Director-General of the British Geological Survey.
