Henri van Geurck (1838-1909) was an entrepreneur, botanist and cell biologist, who did pioneering work in the field of microscopic research and the study of diatoms. Aged just 20, he co-founded the Antwerp Botanical Society with Jan Ignatius De Beucker. In 1877, Van Heurck was appointed director of the Antwerp Botanic Garden for life. He set up a practical course in botany, and redesigned the layout of the garden, increasing the collection of plants to 1600 species..
