Welwitsch'; the signature of Friedrich Martion Josef Welwitsch.The signature of Friedrich Martion Josef Welwitsch appears on the recto of the photograph. Friedrich Martin Josef Welwitsch (1806-1872) was an Austrian explorer and botanist. In the 1850's he travelled to Angola on behalf of the Portuguese Government. He was also the director of the Lisbon Botanic Garden. In 1863 he settled in London, cataloguing the collection at the Natural History Museum.
