Downey, Photographers to Her Majesty 9, Eldon Square, Newcastle on Tyne. London Studio, 61, Ebury St. Eaton Square Portraits taken by appointment'. John Smith (1821-1888) was born in Scotland. He became gardener to the Duke of Northumberland at Syon House in 1859, and then in 1864 he moved to Kew to succeed his namesake John Smith as Curator. He was a member of the RHS Floral Committee. He died in 1888, a few months after his namesake.
