He trained as a gardener in the royal kitchen garden and at the royal garden at Herrenhausen. In 1844 he moved to England to continue training at Kew, and two years later became the botanist on the Herald expedition to the south seas and arctic. His 'Botany of the Herald Voyage' was published in 1852-57. In 1863 he founded the Journal of Botany and in 1860 he was sent to report on Fiji for the Colonial Office..
