John Standish (1814-1875) was a nurseryman. He served his gardening apprenticeship at Bowood, Wiltshire, where his father was forester to the Marquess of Lansdowne. He later became foreman at Bagshot Park near Ascot, and set up his own nursery at Bagshot, which became famous for breeding fuchsias, rhododendrons and calceolarias..
