Watercolour on paper of Geraniums 'Venusta', 'Formosa' and 'Barclayana' (Pelargonium) Caroline Maria Applebee, 1833. 'Pelargonium x Barclayanum: 'Mr Barclay's Stork's-bill', Hybrid named for Robert Barclay Esq.; Pelargonium willdenowii: Named by Johann Heinrich Friedrich Link for his friend, Carl Ludwig Willdenow in 1822, Willdenow qualified as an Apocary and went on to become Director of Royal Botanic Garden in Berlin in 1801. P. willdenowii would have been available in Britain soon afterwards as it is referred to by Sweet in 1820s [Source: Sweet, Hortus Britannicaus, 1827] Pelargonium venustum: Named by Hoffmann in 1824, featured in Sweet's Geranaceae t.167 - raised from seed by Mr Colvill at his nursery 1823 [See also Kasia Boddy, Geranium, 2013]
