Postmarked ('F Paid 16JA16 1843', 'Paid Edin F JAN14 1843', 'Pd JA16 1843'). The letter includes an opened seal. Annotated on the reverse: 'To be delivered immediately on being recd [received] at the garden'
He encloses a letter from Lord Derby's [Edward Smith-Stanley, earl of Derby, British secretary of state for war and the colonies] gardener [enclosure not present]: 'you will see that his lordship has misunderstood you'; he wrote to Mr Jennings [John Jennings, gardener of the earl of Derby at Knowsley] to inform him that he will be happy to collect 'animals and other objects of natural history', but the Horticultural Society will claim all the plants and seeds
