As previously mentioned, the Cornwall arrived with the live and dried plants, and the box of skins for Lord Derby [Edward Smith-Stanley, earl of Derby, British secretary of state for war and the colonies]; the Emerald Isle arrived, and the contents of the four cases are in a 'beautiful state'; all the most important plants survived, but the yellow-flowered shrub was lost and the double peaches are dead, but the azaleas are 'as fresh as when first put in the cases'; the rose with glaucous leaves, resembling a double-yellow rose, appears to be Rosa xanthina: 'it would be as well to get it again if you can'; the Gloxinia was flowering on arrival and appears to be a 'very handsome' Didymocarpus; Mr Edgar [Thomas Edgar, treasurer of the Horticultural Society of London] says that if any captains are willing to bring bamboos, the garden stock is 'exhausted' and they need more for drainage
