He copies an extract from a letter, written 14 Dec 1844, from a friend, who met Mr Fortune [Robert Fortune] in Chusan [Zhoushan, Zhejiang, China]: 'he was much pleased to hear of you, and begged I would give his respects to Mrs B. [?Sarah Jones Bentham, wife of George Bentham] and yourself when I wrote'; he met Fortune twice in Hong Kong attempting to find a passage to the Min River [Fujian, China], and offered him passage, but Fortune was away when they sailed; 'I hear him spoken of as a most indefatigable person, and he looks a hard and persevering Scotch man'
