This note is to let Joseph know of the arrival in Cowes, Isle of Wight, of the merchant ship Eclipse, commanded by Lieutenant Kent of the Royal Navy, which has four boxes and a mat [matted parcel] addressed to him at the Horticultural Society's house; the Eclipse carries coffee and will be sent on after arrival to a foreign port by its owners; Joseph must write to Captain Kent quickly to direct him in sending the boxes; one box is of live plants, including several young plants of the pineapple tree; the second box contains seeds, the third dried specimens, and the fourth birds; the mat contains a branch of the pineapple tree with fruit, and a branch of the guinea palm with fruit; the birds are all that they have seen at St Thomas's except for a coot, a swallow and an eagle; the marine who shot them for him has come down with a fever today, as well as another marine who has accompanied Dr Nicoll [Andrew Nicoll, medical officer in Sierra Leone] for months; one of the marines who was with him at Sierra Leone is dead; it is just as well that they are soon to leave the Coast of Africa; Smith [John Smith, Edward Sabine's assistant] is recovering rapidly, and Don [George Don] and himself have remained healthy
