Scope & content
He acknowledges receipt of Hartweg's letters up to number 8, the last dated 18 Jul; they are 'exceedingly sorry' to hear such an unsatisfactory account of the country, and hope the rains will improve affairs; if not, he must procure the best information he can and try to find a more rich and varied region; they cannot tell where the best places are at this distance, and they ask him to exercise his judgment as to where he should go, bearing in mind that hardy and half-hardy plants form 'the great object' of his mission; his Vera Cruz [Veracruz, Mexico] seeds are growing well and have produced a good crop of young plants; many of the Orchideae are new and the Sabadilla is coming into flower; nothing has arrived from Tampico [Mexico] and they are waiting 'with great impatience' the receipt of some of the results of his mission
