Scope & content
He acknowledges receipt of Hartweg's letter dated 17 Sep, which makes his correspondence complete up to letter number 10; he is taking advantage of an opportunity to write to him through the secretary of state's office; they have not had any news of Hartweg's box HS3 sent by him on 13 Jun to Mr Meade [Richard W. and Denis Meade, merchants in Mexico] of Guanaxuato [Guanajato, Mexico], and they are anxious to receive it; as soon as he receives this letter, Hartweg should write to Mr Meade and to Messrs McCalmont & Lyall & Co [merchants in Mexico] at Tampico [Mexico], who forward Hartweg's letters from there, to inform them the box has not arrived, and that HM ship packets have orders to take all Hartweg's parcels ('perhaps they do not know this'); he is glad to hear of Hartweg's collections, despite them being small, and they are anxious to receive some of them; only the boxes sent from Vera Cruz [Veracruz, Mexico] have arrived; in his letter of 29 Jun he asked Hartweg to send home seeds and roots at every opportunity, in case his collections are detained for a long time in Mexico; Hartweg should have asked his agent in Tampico to advise the Horticultural Society of the shipment of the missing box, and if he did not, he is to ask the agent always to do this in future; they have been unable to find out anything about it in London or Liverpool
