Scope & content
Written from London
He acknowledges receipt of Hartweg's letters up to number 18; a 'fresh credit' for £500 has been opened for him with Messrs Hooton & Co [Byrns, Hooton & Co, merchants in Mexico]; the missing box no 3 arrived in 'pretty good order', but no further boxes have been received due to some 'inexplicable difficulty' in shipping from Tampico [Mexico]; it may be that the captains are refusing to take the boxes, or the agents are not asking the captains, but orders have been sent by the British government to Mr Calmont [McCalmont & Lyall & Co, merchants in Mexico] to forward the cases by the quickest route; he regrets that Hartweg's 'exertions, and our hopes and money are all locked up in the boxes not yet come'; he requests that Hartweg send small parcels monthly; it is unfortunate the country has proved so barren, but they await his collections 'with the greatest anxiety'; he hopes Hartweg's future excursions will prove interesting, and asks him to look out for the Convolvulus, 'which yields the radix mechoacana [?Ipomoea purga]'; they are all well
