Scope & content
They received Hartweg's letters from Oaxaca [Mexico], up to No 31 [dated 17 Jun 1839], and await the arrival of his boxes; the best packing material is Tillandsia, but the clay balls do not serve their purpose; Hartweg should focus on hardy and half-hardy plants, and they are 'glad to receive' epiphytes, cacti and other plants 'if they come in your way', but mountain plants, pines, shrubs and herbaceous plants are more important; Orchideae are 'of paramount importance' in Guatemala; Hartweg's seeds and some of the bulbs are growing well; they have raised a beautiful, white Convolvulus, which Mr Bentham [George Bentham, secretary of the Horticultural Society of London] has named Ipomoea longifolia; the jalap is dead, but the purge macho is growing; some of the cacti appear new; Fuchsia lindleyana is Fuchsia fulgens; none of the hummingbirds were rare or new, and Mr Loddiges [George Loddiges, botanist and naturalist, owner of a nursery in Hackney, London] hopes he will find better in Guatemala
