Scope & content
The plants from Zapatam [Zacualpan, Mexico] arrived safely and in 'excellent order', and they are 'quite satisfied'; he asks Hartweg to provide more details of where he collected his specimens, to enable them to better judge how to cultivate them; they want as much as possible of 'the finer things'; they would have been 'glad of a hatful of the Mahonia seeds', but suspect he sent all he could find; he is very surprised that the greater part of the Orchideae are new, considering the number of people who have been there before him; Mr Loddiges [George Loddiges, botanist and naturalist, owner of a nursery in Hackney, London] looked over them with him yesterday, and recognised fewer than half a dozen species
