Scope & content
He acknowledges receipt of Hartweg's letters up to number 4; the letters have been read before the council; they are 'anxious' to receive something from him; he should send his collections as often as he can, provided the seeds and roots are in a fit state for travelling; 'a Frenchman' has arrived in London with an 'extraordinary' collection of cacti; if Hartweg finds some, a case of 'fine' specimens should be sent, but not of the common species, 'which everybody has'; Cereus senilis [Cephalocereus senilis] and many much rarer species are among this person's collection, said to be from near Tlalpuxahua [Tlalpujahua, Mexico]; he trusts Hartweg is safe and in good health; they are all well; they are thinking of building large hothouses this year; Hartweg should inform them of any information concerning medicinal plants; a parcel of 'seeds etc' will be sent to Mr Lavater [Karl Lavater, Swiss consul in Mexico] as requested; the news about garryas is very interesting, and he is looking forward to seeing the plants; he has named one of Hartweg's orchids from Zacapam [Zacualpan, Mexico] 'Hartwegia purpurea' [Domingoa purpurea]
