Scope & content
Written from Aguas Calientes [Aguascalientes, Mexico]
Postmarked ('London 15 Sep 1837'). Part of an opened seal is attached to the letter
Letter No 8
He left Lagos [Lagos de Moreno, Mexico] on 13 Jul, having found 'very little of interest' there, apart from a few plants of Milla biflora and another plant resembling Calliprora with beautiful yellow flowers; he has 'a good quantity' of bulbs, which he will send at the first opportunity; the area around the town appears more promising than Lagos; the mountains in particular seem promising and more varied following the recent rain ('but still I do not find my expectations realized'); he is making very slow progress with his collections of seeds and dried specimens and only added six specimens during the last month
Hartweg's accounts for 17 Jun-16 Jul 1837 comprise 'monthly allowance' $50, 'wages of the mozo [servant]' $16, 'horse keeping' $14, 'shoeing of horses' $1.2 and 'carriage of luggage' $11, and $120 received in cash from Don Miguel Galvan [unidentified] of Lagos [Lagos de Moreno, Mexico].
