Letter No 4
Hartweg has made several trips to the mountains during the last month despite the unfavourable season; he found 'old acquaintances', including Ribes, Arbutus and Berberis fascicularis [Berberis aquifolium]; he found two new species of Garrya, one nearby, a shrub 15-20 feet high, and the other on the Gigante [El Gigante, Mexico], the highest point of this department [a territorial division] at 9,000 feet above sea level; neither of the flowers are as showy as Garrya elliptica and he has only been able to collect seeds from one; his collection of seeds is small, and he is unlikely to increase it before the rainy season ends; he has collected about 800 dried specimens; in a few days he will be leaving for Leon [Mexico], where he has been told he will find plenty to occupy him; he attaches a copy of this month's expenses
Hartweg's accounts for 16 Feb-16 Mar 1837 comprise of 'personal expenses' $21.4, 'wages of the mozo [servant]' $16, 'horse keeping' $12 and 'shoeing of horses' $2.4 ('balance to be accd [accounted] for $9.3'). Written from Guanajuato [Mexico]
