Letter No 5

He arrived at Leon on 13 Apr, having been delayed by difficulties in finding a carrier for his luggage; he has found a few new plants in the short time he has been in Leon, but the neighbourhood is not as promising as he had hoped; it is 'quite barren' preceding the rainy season; he has not visited the mountains, which are about 10 miles away, but he does not expect to find much variety there, as he visited the mountains from Guanajuato [Mexico]; he attaches a copy of this month's expenses

Hartweg's accounts for 16 Mar-16 Apr 1837 include 'monthly allowance' $50, 'wages of the mozo [servant]' $16, 'shoeing of horses' $1.7, 'private account' $100.4 and 'carrying of luggage' $7.4 [here the list includes 2 more items] ('balance outstanding $9'). Written from Leon [Mexico]
