He acknowledges receipt of a letter dated 29 Jan, which he received on 8 May; he will send a duplicate of each month's letter with the next in the future; he received a letter from Messrs Byrns Hooton & Co [merchants in Mexico], which he will copy and send with this letter; he has found a few plants of an Orchidaea, the only species he has found growing in the mountains here; the plants grow on oak trees, at 8,000 feet above sea level where the temperatures are occasionally freezing; the flower is 'a beautiful pink', and about six inches in diameter; with the 'disturbed state' of this neighbourhood due to 'the late pronouncement of San Luis Potosi [Pronunciamiento of San Luis Potosi, 14 Apr 1837, a military rebellion], and attack upon the money carrier', he will not send the plants until things are more settled; he will send half of the seeds collected, and the rest by another route
On the reverse is a copy of a letter from Messrs Byrns Hooton & Co, written from Mexico [Mexico City, Mexico], 3 May 1837: On 30 Apr they drew £108 11s 8d ($572) from the treasurer of the Horticultural Society, Mr Thomas Edgar, out of which Hartweg was advanced at Veracruz [Mexico] and Mexico [Mexico City] $154.1, and $418.5 in Guanajuato [Mexico]; an annotation by Hartweg states he received $428.50 in Guanajuato
Hartweg's accounts for 17 Apr-16 May 1837 comprise 'monthly allowance' $50, 'wages of the mozo [servant]' $16, 'horse keeping' $10 and 'shoeing of horses' $1.2. Written from Leon [Mexico]
