Letter No 40
He sent eight boxes to Belize on 24 Apr to Messrs Nicholson & Wright [merchants in Belize], and encloses a list of contents [enclosure not present]; he expected to receive instructions in the January or February mail as to where to go next, but has not received them and is consequently 'at a loss what to do, the more so as I cannot fulfil the object of the Society with regard to the plants to be collected'; he has travelled in every direction, but has not found any plants suitable for open air in England: 'I again say that this country is not suited to produce plants of that description, five thousand feet of elevation being about equal to three thousand near the City of Mexico [Mexico City, Mexico]'; he asks for the enclosure [not present] to be forwarded
Hartweg's accounts for 17 Mar-16 Apr 1840 include 'monthly allowance' $50, 'felling of Pinus oocarpa & carriage of cones to Guatemala' $3, '8 boxes, HS56-63' $16, '11 mats' $4.1 and 'string & hide' $1.4 [here the list includes 3 more items], and 'received in cash' $100 from Messrs de Aycinena [Pedro & Ignacio de Aycinena, merchants in Guatemala].
