He made an excursion to Coban [Coban, Guatemala] in Vera Paz [Alta Verapaz Department, Guatemala], but was not successful: 'the country, although very high, produces very little variety', with oaks, Pinus oocarpa, Liquidambar styraciflua and a Viburnum growing in the highest places ('the latter the only kinds of seed I collected'); he found six pretty, possibly new, epiphytes, and will send them later as they are still growing; the last consignment of boxes HS56-63 have arrived at Izabal [Guatemala] and have probably been shipped to England; boxes HS50-55 were shipped on board the Redman directly to London
Hartweg's accounts for 17 Apr-16 May 1840 comprise 'monthly allowance' $50, 'wages of mozo [servant]' $10, 'keeping of four beasts' $13.1, 'shoeing' $1.6 and 'exchange of a horse' $14, and 'received in cash' $100 from Padre Rojo [unidentified] in Coban
