Written from Guatemala [Guatemala City, Guatemala]
Letter No 45
He dispatched box HS66 on 24 Aug, and encloses a list of its contents [enclosure not present]; he acknowledges receipt of a letter of 14 Jul [this letter is not present in the collection] informing him of the Council's resolution that he should travel to 'the equatorial parts of South America' due to the trouble in Guatemala and the difficulty in obtaining suitable plants; he has consulted Mr Skinner [George Ure Skinner, British merchant and naturalist in Guatemala], who thinks highly of the vegetation there, and said it should be easy to obtain a passage in the ports of Sonsonate [El Salvador] or the Union for Guayaquil [Ecuador] in January; he has a 'fine' collection of Orchideceae and other plants; some of these plants, especially those planted in earth and the young oaks, are so delicate that he may have to travel with them to Belize himself to ensure they will be cared for; Messrs P. & I. de Aycinena [Pedro & Ignacio de Aycinena, merchants in Guatemala] have requested a bill from the Society's treasurer of £400, 'which draft is accompanied by a note from me'
Hartweg's accounts for 17 Aug-16 Sep 1840 comprise 'monthly allowance' $50, 'wages of mozo' $10, 'repairing of bridles & saddles' $1.7, 'box HS66 & matting' $1.7, 'freight of box' $4.3
