Unnumbered letter
He will send the letter with a Mr John Maclean [unidentified]; he arrived in Lima five days ago: 'you will be surprised that I am here', but he was unable to find a passage to Guayaquil [Ecuador]; he expects to leave before the end of the month; Guayaquil is said to be very 'unhealthy' at present, as the rains have set in, and the mountain roads to Cuenca [Ecuador] and Loxa [Loja, Ecuador] are said to be almost impassable; he has not collected much since leaving Guatemala, but he did find 'the long-wished-for' Convolvulus mechoacanus [Convolvulus mechoacana, identification unresolved as at Jun 2019] with brick-coloured flowers; he has not received any letters since leaving Guatemala, despite sending a messenger from Conchagua [El Salvador] to Sonsonate [El Salvador], and is anxious to know how to obtain money in Colombia; he borrowed some 'numbers' of the 'Journal of Botany' from Maclean ('which were sent to his care by Sir W. J. Hooker [William Jackson Hooker, professor of botany at the University of Glasgow and director of the Glasgow Botanic Gardens. In 1841 he became the director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew] to Dr Jameson [William Jameson, botanist and naturalist in Ecuador] of Quito [Ecuador]'), and learned that Mr Bentham is describing his Mexican collections and that new species are numerous; when he reaches Guayaquil he will write again and send a copy of his last letter and a duplicate of the list of his last consignment
