The last month has been productive for finding seeds; he made an excursion to the warmer parts on the western side of Pichincha [Ecuador] and found some seeds of the 'long-wished-for' Fuchsia triphylla and two other new Fuchsia, a Cestrum three inches high with a dark blue corolla and a 'pretty, fragrant' Monina [rose]; elsewhere he found Crataegus stipularis [unidentified] of 'Kth [Kunth, Carl Sigismund Kunth, German botanist, who visited Central America in 1829-1832], resembling Crataegus mexicana; he found more of Herbert's [William Herbert, British botanist] Phycella chloracra [Phaedranassa dubia] in San Antonio [Ecuador], 'a village under the very line'; he has planned more excursions, and will then send his collections and continue to Popayan [Popayan, Colombia] in about three weeks; Messrs Zeyher [Karl Ludwig Philipp Zeyher, botanical and insect collector in South Africa] and Metzger [?Johann Christian Metzger, German landscape architect and gardener], who had subscribed to his dried specimens, have not received any yet, and a 'set of the Mexican specimens' should be sent, 'if there are any left, and if not, he may receive some of the equatorial collection'; he intends to draw £120 on the Society, expecting it to last until a credit can be opened for him in Bogota [Colombia]
Hartweg's accounts for 13 May-13 Jun 1842 comprise 'monthly allowance' $50, 'wages of mozo [servant]' $5, 'keeping of 3 mules' $7.6 and 'guides' $0.6
