Scope & content
He received a letter from Mr Theodor Hartweg, employed as a Horticultural Society collector in Mexico saying he had sent two boxes of live plants, marked HS1-2, to Vera Cruz [Veracruz, Mexico] to be dispatched by the first ship; he saw in today's paper that 'the Hope packet has arrived', and assumes the boxes to be on board; as there will be frequent dispatching of such packages for the next year or two, he asks them to be 'cleared' and transmitted to the Society by a van [a covered wagon for transporting goods]; the Lords of the Admiralty have directed the captains to allow free transport for the cases, as detailed in the enclosed copy of a letter from Sir John Barrow [secretary of the Board of Admiralty] [enclosure not present]; he asks them to detail the charges incurred by them on each occasion
