He acknowledges receipt of a letter dated 16 Dec; Mr Hartweg's [Theodor Hartweg] box HS3 was sent to England on HM packet Goldfinch, and the commander promised to forward it immediately on his arrival; they have received five boxes of seeds and plants from Hartweg a few days ago, but could find no space on board HM Packet Lord Melville; they are enclosing a copy of the letter by the captain; they will attempt to send the boxes by the next ship; Hartweg has opened a credit with Messrs Byrns & Co [merchants] in Mexico [Mexico City, Mexico]
Enclosed is a copy of letter from Charles Webbe [captain of Lord Melville] to Messrs McCalmont & Lyall & Co. Written in Tampico, 17 Mar 1838. He would transport the five boxes of seeds and plants to England, but there is no room, as he received in Vera Cruz [Veracruz, Mexico] six large boxes 'of the same description', and passengers' luggage which takes up space in the hold
Annotated at the bottom of the page in another hand: 'The last date from Tampico is 13 April'
