Scope & content
The Lord's Council of the Admiralty [Lord High Admirals Council] directed the commanders of the Mexican packets [ships] to transmit packages from the Horticultural Society free of charge, provided they are not inconveniently large or numerous; the Society received three shipments of packages at the end of 1837 and beginning of 1838; in Mar 1838, five boxes of live plants were sent to Tampico [Mexico], but the agents Messrs McCalmont, Lyall & Co [merchants in Mexico] were refused passage for them by the captain of the Lord Melville; the Council have been informed that two HM packets have since arrived at England from Tampico without bringing the boxes with them; they hope orders will be given to avoid delay in sending the 'extremely valuable' and perishable seeds and plants
