Scope & content
The Society sent a 'young man', Mr Theodor Hartweg, to Mexico to collect seeds and dried plants; his collections are in the possession of Messrs McCalmont, Lyall & Co [merchants in Mexico] in Tampico [Mexico]; the commanders of British ships have orders from the Admiralty to transport boxes to England, but due to 'some unexplained cause, packet [ship] after packet reaches England without bringing these chests'; they are sure Messrs McCalmont & Co are doing their best to ensure the dispatch of these valuable and perishable boxes; he asks for assistance in facilitating the dispatch of the boxes in his official capacity as the British consul; the Honourable W.F. Strangways [William Fox-Strangways, British under-secretary of state for foreign affairs] will forward this letter to him: 'I need hardly add that the Society will be greatly obliged to you for your good offices in this to us, very vexatious, detention'; Hartweg is not in Mechoacan [Michoacan de Ocampo, Mexico], and it is possible that his packages will in the future be sent to Vera Cruz [Veracruz, Mexico] to the care of Messrs Munoz, Matfield & Co [merchants in Mexico]
