Date
6 Dec 1838
Scope & content
Written from Falmouth
They acknowledge receipt of a letter dated 4 Dec; the packet [ship] Swift was restricted to bringing bullion [gold and silver] and cochineal [cochineal insects, used for producing carmine dye], whereby the captain, Lieutenant Welch [captain of the Swift] was 'not furnished with a manifest'; it seems improbable that the Society will receive any packages from Mexico during the blockade of the coast by the French squadron, as the ships tend to be crowded with passengers and cargo to Havannah [Havana, Cuba]
