Scope & content
Written from 2 Parliament Street [London]
He visited Regent Street hoping to find either Bentham or Lindley [John Lindley, assistant secretary of the Horticultural Society of London], but without success; he has spoken to Sir John Barrow [secretary of the Board of Admiralty], and the Admiralty is willing to assist; the only cochineal [cochineal insects, used for producing carmine dye] brought was 'a limited quantity, which was certified to be in danger of spoiling if kept longer', but there will be no more; Barrow recommends application to Mr Strangways [William Fox-Strangways, British under-secretary of state for foreign affairs] for letters to the consuls asking assistance in obtaining permission from the French authorities for the boxes to be dispatched; he thinks the local agents have been neglectful and are to blame
