The Horticultural Society of London is sending their botanical collector, Mr Theodor Hartweg, from Mexico to Guatemala; instructions were forwarded to Mexico City [Mexico] by the last ship, and the council of the Society authorized on 8 Dec a credit of £500 to Hartweg; they should supply Hartweg with the money via their correspondents Messrs Pedro & Ignacio de Aycinena [merchants] of Guatemala City [Guatemala]; their expenses will be reimbursed by the Society; the Society will not pay any bills incurred by Hartweg without a signature from them or their correspondents; he encloses an example of Hartweg's handwriting for reference; when Hartweg left England in Oct 1836, the Admiralty ordered captains of ships to transport his collections free of charge, but thus far they have only received three small packages, with 12 boxes awaiting at Vera Cruz [Veracruz, Mexico] and Tampico [Mexico]; they hope for assistance in preventing the same occurring again, and packages should be forwarded as quickly as possible, with any expenses reimbursed; he will deliver this letter in person to Mr Wright; Hartweg has been instructed to contact Messrs Aycinena on his arrival
Annotated in pencil with a note of instruction for Hartweg to contact Messrs Aycinena on entering Guatemala and to write to them to inform them of his routes and to arrange for places for them to send letters to, and 'to obviate as much as possible the serious loss of having large collections spoiled', he should send smaller, individual packages more frequently to be forwarded to Belize
