He asks for information about Mr Hartweg [Theodor Hartweg], as they have not heard from him since his letter dated 28 Jul at Monterey, when he promised to send more seeds; they fear an 'accident may have befallen him'; he hopes they received the copies of instructions of 6 Aug 1846 from the government of the United States of America to their officers in the Pacific authorising them to give Hartweg 'all the facilities and protection in their power'
