He is taking advantage of the sudden departure of the schooner Nathalia for Mazatlan [Mexico], and does not have much time to write; he acknowledges receipt of a letter of 1 Jul 1846, which he received on 9 Jul 1847, and of 15 Jan 1847 which he received on 18 Oct 1847; he has no record of sending boxes numbered HS3 and 4; he has been waiting for a passage to Panama for some time, due to unrest in Mexico; two Wardian cases filled with evergreen chestnuts and oaks are 'coming on well', and he expects to be able to take them with him across the isthmus [Isthmus of Panama]; he encloses two tin cases [enclosures not present] to be sent to the care of Messrs Barron, Forbes & Co [merchants in Mexico] in Tepic [Mexico] and Messrs Manning, Mackintosh & Co [agents of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in Mexico] in Vera Cruz [Veracruz, Mexico]; one of the cases contains 25 kinds of bulbs, and the other 112 kinds of seeds
