He landed at Vera Cruz [Veracruz, Mexico] on 13 Nov, after the usual passage of 45 days; he delivered his letters of introduction and made arrangements with Messrs Manning and Mackintosh [agents of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in Mexico] to send on the collections he may forward to their care; he arrived on the 16 Nov and was welcomed by Mr Sartorius [Carl Christian Sartorius, German botanist in Mexico], the former partner of Mr Lavater [Karl Lavater, Swiss consul in Mexico]; he made an excursion to the colder district of Orizaba [Mexico] during the few days he spent in Zacualpan where he found a pine which he takes to be Pinus pseudostrobus, the cones of which were barely ripe and contained only a few good seeds; also a variety of Pinus llaveana [Pinus cembroides] with more elongated cones than the one he found near Zimapan [Mexico], and of this he secured an ample supply; seeds of Juniperus mexicana [?Juniperus compacta or Juniperus deppeana], roots of Exogonium purga [Ipomoea dumosa]; he encloses a list of his collection, which will leave Vera Cruz tomorrow in time to be forwarded by this packet; he will start at the same time for Jalapa [Xalapa, Mexico] and thence to Mexico [Mexico City]
