Postmarked ('Vera-Cruz FE1 1846', 'ZJ 8MR8 1846'). The letter includes an opened seal
They acknowledge receipt of a letter dated 30 Sep presented by Mr Theodor Hartweg, authorising them to advance him £250; Messrs Manning & Mackintosh [agents of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in Mexico] in Mexico [Mexico City, Mexico] wrote saying they had arranged with Hartweg for his remaining £400 credit to be transferred to them; Hartweg delivered them letters from Dr Forbes [John Forbes, physician to Prince Albert, brother of Alexander Forbes, merchant in Mexico] and Mr James Gray [unidentified]; 'we have made Mr Hartweg take up his abode with us, and shall do everything we possibly can to make him comfortable during his residence here'; Hartweg is 'busy in examining this neighbourhood', and when he continues his journey to California [United States of America], they will give him letters of introduction to the 'principal residents' and arrange transportation of his collections
